Mr. Anil Gurung, a 41-year-old farmer from Pokhara-22, Dhawa, resides in a household of three members. Prior to his engagement with the APPIN project, Mr. Gurung had not received any formal training in vegetable production and primarily relied on traditional practices and informal knowledge gained from other farmers. His understanding of improved agricultural technologies such as mulching, drip irrigation, and plastic house management was limited.
Through the APPIN project, Mr. Gurung received high-quality cauliflower seeds along with technical training on nursery management, integrated pest management, and post-harvest practices including sorting and grading. He established his nursery in mid-August 2025 and carried out transplanting in early September. Harvesting commenced in the second week of November and continued until mid-December. In addition to cauliflower, he also cultivated beans, further diversifying his production.
As a result of the project’s technical support and regular field monitoring, Mr. Gurung achieved a total cauliflower production of 2,000 kg from 3 ropani of land. He was able to sell his produce at an initial price of Rs. 90 per kg, which later stabilized at NPR 60 per kg, generating an approximate income of Rs. 200,000 from cauliflower and an additional Rs. 25,000 from beans. The intervention significantly contributed to increased productivity, improved crop management, and reduced post-harvest losses.
The income generated has supported household expenditures, including his child’s education, and enabled reinvestment in agricultural tools such as a sprayer and mini tiller. Mr. Gurung’s progress has positioned him as a role model within his community, encouraging other farmers to adopt improved agricultural practices and engage in commercial vegetable farming.
