We are thrilled to share the success of our recently conducted three-day Sanitation and Hygiene Training from 25 – 27 July 2023 at Balefi Rural Municipality for the community beneficiaries of the 5 water supply schemes of PIWAAI. This transformative experience focused on promoting clean living and a healthier lifestyle. Participants gained valuable knowledge about proper handwashing, safe water storage, food safety, sanitation facilities, and personal hygiene habits.
The highlight of the training was the session on Menstrual Hygiene Management which addressed the deeply ingrained social norms surrounding menstruation and included making reusable cloth pads introducing sustainable menstruation practices and empowering young girls and women with improved menstrual hygiene management. This comprehensive approach is vital for our community’s well-being, reducing waterborne illnesses, and environmental impact, and fostering economic empowerment. Together, we are building a happier, healthier, and more sustainable future for everyone in our community.
“We have lived with cultural taboos and faced stigma and shame during our periods, but now we understand that we should break free from these notions, and embrace sustainable menstruation practices, not only for the environment but also for our own economic well-being. We are excited to use our newly acquired skills to make reusable cloth pads for ourselves and also to break the silence surrounding menstruation to create a more supportive and understanding society that celebrates menstrual health and well-being.” – Sanisha Tamang, Moktan Tole, Balefi RM.
