The Mini Farm Project, implemented under the Project for Improving Water Access and Agriculture Income, has become a beacon of knowledge, and learning for the farmers from the area and beyond. This endeavor aimed to cultivate various seasonal and off-seasonal vegetable crops using farmer-friendly technologies while providing a learning center for farmers.
Two mini-farms that were established in Melamchi and Sunkoshi, had the vision to create a nurturing environment where farmers can learn, grow, and adopt innovative agriculture practices. Throughout the three years of the project, the mini-farms served as an educational hub where various crops such as cucumbers, bitter gourds, sponge gourds, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower and others were grown using technologies such as nursery beds, mulching, seed germination using a plastic tray and many others. The mini farm was also a center for farmers to learn about various kinds of pests and diseases and their management. The use of pheromone traps, jholmal, biopesticides, knowledge of IPM methods along with chemical pesticides were also provided. Farmers visited also for hands-on learning of making nursery beds, using polypots and many others.
Farmers from the region and beyond had the opportunity to witness and learn firsthand about the application of suitable technologies and effective intercultural operations empowering farmers to increase their agricultural income and enhance their livelihoods.
