Neema Dorje Pakhrin is 40 years old member of the Durgadevi Farmer’s Group in Sunkoshi Rural Municipality who was able to intensify his agriculture production with ISAP’s intervention of PIWAAI. He is a smart farmer who chose to produce high value crops and understood the all-important aspect of marketing as a prerequisite for enhancing his agriculture-based economic growth and increasing his income early on.
Although direct marketing is difficult for most of the small-holder farmers as they depend on informal markets and other intermediaries to take their produces in the marketplace, there are other factors that discourage these farmers from transitioning from subsistence farming to commercializing as well. The difficult road accessibilities to marketplaces, the resources to fulfill the supply and demand, and lack of marketing knowledge and skills can make it intimidating for most farmers.
However, with ISAP’s intervention that incorporates marketing and bookkeeping training to leader farmers and other farmers, farmers like Nima have been upskilled in establishing their marketing networks and take the advantage of marketing opportunity and earn better prices by supplying huge quantities by collecting vegetables produce from all farmers. His leadership in the collection and taking them to the marketplaces in Khadichaur and Mude, has been encouraging many farmers commercial prospects in Sunkoshi. Moreover, transparent regulations and transactions to allow accessibility of farmers to the market has also lead farmers to prioritize meeting quality standards and apply best practices in their production.
