In remote rural Nepal, women and girls are the primary collectors, transporters, and managers of the household water supply. For decades, women have walked for more than 2 hours just to fetch water and their exclusion from community resource management and decision-making process has pinned them for a long time in this harsh condition.
Project for Improving Water Access and Agriculture Income, which is being implemented in Sindhupalchok seeks to invite, encourage, trust and support women to be agents of change for a resource that is integral to their lives. The project has positioned women in the frontlines of improving water supply, sanitation, and community health services in the village elevating their status and validating their importance in the community. Despite being aware of the social costs, many women have participated in the activities as a way of giving back to their community as well. From holding crucial positions in the Water User’s Committee to contributing towards construction of the water supply infrastructures and receiving adequate training to provide technical support to ensure the sustainability of their Water Supply System as Village Maintenance Workers, women have assumed active and meaningful participation in every aspect.
