• Five Day Training for Leader Farmer Conducted:

    As said by John C. Maxwell ,“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” Leader farmer in context of SAFII project, who hold the biggest responsibility to provide extension services to their aspiring fellow farmers, must be competent enough in terms of knowledge and technique as to manage, lead and inspire other farmers in their farmer groups even after the project phases out.

    Recognizing the importance of sustainability of the project, 5 days training for leader farmers was jointly organized by ISAP and Peace Winds Japan from 11th to 15th February with an aim to enhance leader farmers technical skill and knowledge. The training, which was conducted in Banepa saw the presence of 19 leader farmers,10 men and 9 women. Facilitated by veteran agriculture professionals, input and output trader, the training covered topics related to social mobilization and cooperative formation, nursery management,cultivation techniques of major vegetables, pest and disease management, agriculture value chain and current market trend, soil management techniques and organic farming. The facilitator for the training were Mr. Arun Kafle, Senior Officer, Vegetable Crop Development Center, Khumaltar, Mr. Indra Raj Pandey, President, Nepal Horticulture Society, Dinesh Dhungana, Director, Agriculture Research Development and Management, Mr. Krishna Bhadra Adhikari, Chief, Agriculture Resource Center,Kavre, Mr. Umesh Sapkota, Horticulture Development Officer, Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Kavre, Jaya Ram Sigdel, Director, Kavre Krishi Bazar,Mr. Khageshwor Bhattarai, Proprietor, Himalayan Agro Enterprises Center (HARC).

    The first day of the training started with shedding light on training objective and highlighting on the roles and responsibilities of leader farmer. It was then followed by session on social mobilization/group formation and nursery construction and its management. On the second day, the participants learned about the cultivation techniques of different seasonal and off seasonal vegetables.On the third day, the participants had an interactive session with the input supplier where they voiced their queries related to modern agriculture technologies and use of insecticides and pesticides. In addition, there was a separate session on major diseases and pest affecting fresh vegetable along with its management techniques. On the fourth day, the participants got to hear from the output trader on the present scope of fresh vegetable market and the current market system. To provide participants with practical approaches of learning, they were taken for a visit to Nepal Agriculture Research Center (NARC) to demonstrate modern cultivation technologies and techniques. On the final day of training, the participants reviewed the first year of the project in terms of production, income and effectiveness of project activities. The training was concluded with certificate distribution to participants on successful completion of training.

    The training was concluded to be fruitful by all the participants who actively interacted with resource persons throughout the training and shared their first hand experience with them seeking solutions for the problems they were facing in their field. While this training focused on further grooming technical expertise of leader farmers, it was also a step forward to gain solidarity and commitment from all the leader farmer to disseminate their learnings to other aspiring farmers for effective implementation of SAFII project during as well as beyond the project timeframe.

    (There are 20 leader farmers chosen under SAFII project who are selected on the basis of their expertise, scale of production, ability and skill to share information. With an objective to shift technology transfer model from top down approach to bottom up approach through LFs, these LF will have a significant role in training, monitoring, advising their fellow farmers and acting as a liaison between organization and FGs)
